Court Markings & Lines

Knowing all the court markings and terminology is imperative for players and coaches to communicate effectively during and after the game. Lets avoid confusion by going over the basics.

Baselines/Endlines

The baselines or end lines are 4 feet behind the backboard. They mark the inbounds and outbounds of the court. The offensive end of the court is called the baseline and the defensive end of the court is called the endline.

Sidelines

The sidelines run the length of the court. They connect to the baselines forming the perimeter and size of the court. They are the longest lines you will see. They also mark the inbounds and outbounds of the court. Coaches, players, and news reporters will be seen on the outside of these lines.

Midcourt Line

This line is located exactly in the middle of the court and divides it perfectly in two halves. Also known as the half-court line and the timeline.

Three Point Line

This arched line goes around each teams basket. Shots scored outside this line are worth 3 points, and inside the line are worth 2 points.

Free Thow Line

This line is where the player will stand behind when shooting free throws.

Free Throw Circle

These matter during jump balls and free throws. During jump balls, non jumpers cannot enter the circle until the ball is touched by a jumper. During free throws, the player must stay inside the circle.

Lane Line

Lane lines go from the baseline to the free throw line. Until the ball leaves the free throw shooters hand, non shooters cannot step past these lines.

Center Circle

This is where the game starts. Jump balls also occur here and non jumpers must stay outside the circle until the ball is touched by a jumper.
